4 Common Types Of Load Restraint Systems Used In The Freight Industry

There are several types of load restraint systems that are frequently used in the freight industry. These systems help secure cargo for transportation.

Take a look at how these different systems work and how they compare with one another. Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages, although they are often used in conjunction with one another to achieve optimal load security.

The freight industry uses polyester straps to hold cargo in place. These straps can be used to secure a variety of loads because of the wide range of of widths and strengths, making them a flexible option.

One benefit of strappings is the flexibility, which  makes it perfect for securing loads of various shapes and sizes. The use of hooks or buckles on strappings allows it to be wrapped around various shapes of cargo and fastened to the truck’s or trailer’s tie-down points. To make sure that the cargo is securely fastened in place, the tension in the straps can be adjusted.

Lashings

Cargo Lashing

Lashing straps are more stretchy and flexible than regular polyester straps and are used to tighten and secure the cargo by using a ratcheting mechanism to increase tension. Lashing straps are most often made from nylon and are typically used to stabilise loads inside containers or on flat racks, where the cargo is exposed to the elements and might move while being transported.

One benefit is that they can be tightened quickly and easily, which helps to conserve time and effort. Additionally, the ratcheting mechanism offers a more secure hold than conventional buckles or hooks, which reduces the possibility of cargo shifting or coming loose during transit. Proper lashing techniques can help to optimize the use of space on the flat rack or inside the container, allowing for more cargo to be transported in a single trip, which can save time, fuel, and other resources.

Tarps

When transporting cargo, tarps are often used to cover loads and hold goods in place. Typically, tarps are made of robust materials that are waterproof and durable against tearing and abrasion, such as vinyl or canvas.

Tarps can be fastened in place with straps or cords to prevent them from coming loose during transit. Container tarps are particularly helpful for holding goods inside a container and reducing the risk of goods falling out of the container when the doors are opened.

Dunnage Bags

Dunnage bags are inflatable airbags made of polypropylene or similar materials. These bags are positioned between cargo loads to prevent them from moving while being transported. Dunnage bags can be quickly inflated and deflated to the right air pressure using an air compressor or portable inflation unit, making them ideal for filling gaps and ensuring that cargo doesn’t move during transit.

Dunnage bags have several advantages over other load restraint systems. For example, they are lightweight and easy to handle, which eliminates the risk of injury to workers. They can also be reused multiple times, which makes them a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for securing cargo.
